Interested in learning more about the jointer, planer, table saw or domino?
We also have a volunteer/ learning opportunity coming up.
@gordoa40 is going to help make doors for the new space. This includes milling raw lumber down to size and using domino’s to glue it together. If you’d like to lend a hand, learn more about milling or the domino machine, or just hang out for support, come on by.
The first session will be on Thursday, Feb 6th, at 6pm.
He will continue on Sat Feb 8th, at 10am.
This is a great opportunity to gain more experience on tools in the woodshop!
Excited to get started everyone! I’ll probably be there around 5:30, but feel free to come and go whenever. This won’t really be a class or anything, more just a learn-by-doing on wood you don’t have to pay for yourself So you don’t need to show up at the beginning, necessarily. I’ll do my best to answer questions and to spread my knowledge, and let everyone have some hands-on time at the machines if they want it.
To be honest, I have never built a door either, but there’s a first time for everything and I have done a lot of milling and can (usually) get things square, so just lending my efforts to the expansion as best I can. James has kindly acquired the lumber already, as well as some extra dominos and other consumables.
We’ll see what we get done today, but I think today will probably be mostly about just milling; I kind of doubt we’ll get to assembly today, but we’ll see! Maybe with all of the help, we’ll knock it out quick. We have 5 doors to make, and I think about 100 linear feet of lumber to mill, so we have our work cut out for us (pun intended).
We had a great time practicing our skills and learning some tips and tricks from each other. Despite a bit of a slow start, due to there being only 1 jointer and ~5 people helping, once we had gotten a few pieces through the jointer and onto the rest of the process, everyone had was busy and took turns on the jointer, planer, and table saw, and got some hands on practice with the domino too.
We ended up getting most of the wood milled, and gluing up one of the doors! On Saturday, I expect to finish milling and get the other 4 glued up! Hopefully it will move a bit faster, now that we have an idea of what we’re doing.
Back at it today! I’m running a bit late, so be there around 10:30 or so. If anyone gets there early, feel free to start milling the rest or unloading materials!
There’s a repeating pattern on those milled boards, as if they were flattened on the CNC using a surfacing bit. Did those cross grain stripes come from some other tool?
