“Before I leave my house, how do I know the planer isn’t down?”
The deeper logistics and administrative question: how do we red tag something and it actually be red tagged across all channels? And when it is lifted, how do we update all channels?
Here’s a possible problem report workflow solution and a step-by-step implementation plan (plan developed with assistance from Claude) …
… uh, I may have been obsessing over this issue a bit
Add to that, I think it would also be helpful now to have a group of ASMBLY insiders gather around the diagram and embellish it with the additional what-ifs they know from our real world at ASMBLY.
Here is a half-joke: Set up a webcam directed at each machine and watching for red and yellow tags (or their absence), backed by video analytics and auto update to ClickUp! For the unreported cases.
Chanda, I appreciate the clear diagram! And as @Rolo said it’s awesome that so many people are interested in improving this.
We do already have unique QR codes for each machine, but a few have either wandered off or not been created for recent equipment. They are printed in blue ink, I believe on the sublimation printer. They currently point to each machine’s wiki page, which is great for documenting basic usage/maintenance/manuals, and anyone with a Discourse account can contribute to the wiki. The Prusa XL 3D printer, for example, also has an embedded webcam feed. Perhaps a “red tag status” dashboard could be embedded on individual tools’ wiki pages.
We also have red QR codes all over the space, and we encourage people to over-use these, even for minor problems. Historically we have not wanted these to be unique to equipment—this way members can report issues from anywhere in the space (or even from home, when you wake up in the middle of the night and remember that you forgot to report something, not that that has ever happened to me at asmbly.org/problem).
I see the argument for having unique problem QR codes, but that creates some administrative burden to print and maintain them. I think these are some great topics for the IT volunteer day, and one easy volunteer task might be to take an inventory of our existing QR codes and forms and see if they can be updated/refreshed.
