Saw dust and sparks are incredibly dangerous.
Last night around 8pm, a member was using the oscillating spindle sander when it suddenly a mechanical issue started sending sparks. This is not caused by the activities on the sander. The member immediately shut down the tool, put a red tag on it, and reported it through the problem report form. By this time some of the wood dust had already started to smolder. The member cleared what seemed appropriate so there were no immediate hazards.
At 1248 am, more than 4.5 hrs later, smoke can be seen puffing out of the machine. By 130am a clear stream of smoke is visible. After 2 am, smoke was clear and likely a fire was going to start if left unattended.
A different member was around, noticed the situation, grabbed the fire extinguisher and put it out.

This is a good reminder to clean up well after yourself each day you’re in the shop to prevent dust built ups. Workday’s are important to help get those extra spaces that don’t often get touched.
The spindle sander is red tagged for now
