Drill Press Laser Alignment

This is a follow up to my earlier post: Drill Press: Laser, Base

I intended to check the stability of the laser alignment after a couple of weeks, but catching COVID made the test more robust; I couldn’t follow up for well over a month. And the laser alignment did appear stable over that time period.

I thus put in some effort to really nail down the alignment, for the entire range of quill motion. I ended up creating a revised procedure, which I’ve posted on the wiki, linked from the page for the drill press: Powermatic 2820EVS Drill Press - Asmbly Wiki. And Charlie and I will add a quarterly entry to check it in the Maintenance List/Log he is trying to create.

So if you use the laser crosshairs on the drill press (not many do), let me know if you think the alignment is good. I’m particularly interested if you get acceptable results across the full range of quill motion and for a variety of tool lengths.
