Z Height on Hermes

I did some test prints on Hermes this evening. I noticed a couple of problems: the sheet was set for Custom1 even though the Satin sheet was on the printer, and the Z height was set to somewhere near -2.7mm. This was low enough that the first layer was being ground into the plate.

The outer line in this picture is at -2.7, the inner is almost a whole mm higher.

this is what you’re looking for on a first layer:

If you see wrinkling like the lower half of this, the height is too low:

Note that if you’re seeing your print peel up from the surface after a few layers, or seeing it sticking in some places, but failing to stick in others, the problem is probably not Z height.

Peeling is usually caused by temperature settings or insufficient surface area against the bed. Adding brims can help with this, or dialing in the temperature for your filament.

If filament just doesn’t seem to stick to some places on the plate but it’s fine on others, it’s probably because the plate is dirty. As people handle the plate, their hand oils are left behind and make it harder for filament to stick. Isopropyl alcohol wipes can help with this, but dish soap is even better.
