A ton of work has been happening over the last several months to develop the physical space (endless thanks to @jamesfreeman for leading this charge — check this thread for current opportunities to help) as well as the organizational aspects of our new ceramics offerings.
Our new Ceramics shop area is coming together wonderfully thanks to an incredible team of volunteers who have been working hard to set up the space, plan operations, and build a strong foundation for success. Huge thank you to @HannaKessler @NickE @EAK58 @csader Seth @winnie and Corinne for all the collaboration from the experienced ceramacist perspective!
Our newest staff member @Laurel has been an active part of that work as well and will be our staff person dedicated to all things ceramics to help ensure we never miss a beat as we embark on opening this new shop area at Asmbly.
Without further ado, here’s some starting info about the upcoming Ceramics shop area at Asmbly!
Membership Options
Due to the increased costs with running a ceramics shop, access to ceramics will be an upgraded Asmbly membership with the cost determined by the size of storage, selected from the following 3 options:
- Half Shelf: $175/month — 24″ x 24″ x 18″
- Full Shelf: $250/month — 24″ x 48″ x 18″
- Top Shelf: $300/month — 24″ x 48″ with ~48″ vertical space to the ceiling above the shelf unit; limited availability!
Membership includes firings, a limited selection of glazes, community contributed molds & dies, and 21/7 facility access (from 5am to 2am every day, same as the rest of Asmbly). All ceramics memberships include full access to the rest of Asmbly’s shops (woodshop, metal shop, lasers, textiles, 3D printing, and electronics).
*Current Asmbly members must upgrade to one of the above membership options to have access to the ceramics shop outside of classes.
We will share a member interest form soon that will allow you to get on the list for ceramics memberships!
Classes
Same as the rest of Asmbly classes, anyone can take classes — membership is not required. There will only be 1 required class for members to gain full access to the ceramics shop (Ceramics Safety & Procedures) and the cost of that class is included in membership. All other classes are optional and members are welcome to use whatever equipment they feel comfortable with.
Firings
Kiln operation will only be done by trained staff and volunteers who have been authorized to do so. There are no additional fees for firing — it’s included in classes and membership. Class students who are not members will be able to pick up their ceramics pieces after firings during specified times.
