Woodturning Update

Hey y’all! Just wanted to make those who are interested aware of what I’m doing/planning to do in the woodturning area, as well as some recent issues.

Areas where I could use your help:

  • There’s some aspects of turning that I’m not as familiar with, so I would love to reach out to people who are to make sure that I’m organizing the shop better for y’all. Mainly, I’m reaching out to pen turners and segmented bowl turners.

Updates:

  1. I did some reorganization of the chuck drawer and the sanding/drilling drawer. The sanding dividers are a bit loose currently, but I’ll get them more secure soon. I will also get labels on there so that this organization is easier to maintain/everyone knows where everything is. The Allen keys for changing the jaws on the nova chucks are stored with the jaws compartment, which will hopefully solve the confusion that led to several screws being stripped/with incorrect bits snapped off inside of them.

The top and bottom drawer will get attention soon. Sorry to any pen turners for the chaos in that bottom drawer.

Also, a ton of equipment was left on the lathes (shown below). Especially now, please remove all headstock/tailstock attachments and return them to their storage space when you’re done turning.

  1. I have color coded the one way jig so that gouge sharpening can be standardized and color coded. I will regrind and color code all gouges in the coming week or two.

  2. The button on big bird has been tightened down and is working much better now. The buttons still need to be pressed in the center, pressing towards the outside edge does not work well. Something to keep in mind!

  3. I’ve claimed the top left drawer as the instructors drawer. If you damage any equipment, please report it and put it in that drawer so that I can easily find and fix it, and so that it’s taken out of rotation for others.

  4. On that note, I discovered lots of damaged mounting equipment and snapped off screws in the face plates recently (shown below.) These things happen, but when they do, they need to be reported so that they can be fixed. Not all of the wood-turning equipment is used commonly, so if it’s not reported it can be easily missed and not addressed. Thanks to everyone who has been reporting issues!

  5. The spindle lock on the tail stock of Ernie was not working. It can currently be tightened with the wrench sitting next to it on the table. I will look to replace that part, or make my own replacement.

What’s next?

  1. Color coding gouges for sharpening. I will post a guide here and on the wiki when I do so.
  2. Organizing measurement and pen turning drawers.
  3. Maintenance lathe bed surfaces so that tool rests can be adjusted easier.
  4. General repair of several damaged pieces of mounting equipment.

Let me know of any other woodturning concerns!

Where did you put the cole jaws that were in the instructor drawer? I need them to finish a project and I’ve been looking 10+ minutes and can’t find them.

This day is a complete wash for me without them.

Not to punish someone for doing a good thing but this is really annoying. It wasn’t really broken and even though it is a “nice to have” there is a saying about fixing things that aren’t broke.

Bottom left of the instructors cabinet (below the drawer now marked instructors)

Sorry for any pains while I reorganize. Needed to move some things so that other drawers could be reorganized and used correctly. I will put those in a more visible area soon.

Dude…

They will have a place in the chuck drawer. I was unable to get everything in place today and will be back tomorrow.

Thank you for your patience. This is not the finished product.

Updated with a place for the Cole jaws. Compartments have been labeled and the outsides of drawers/cabinets have been relabeled to better reflect their contents.
