Wood Shop Chisels

I spent a good 5 hours today flattening the back of the chisels, re-establishing the primary bevel, and sharpening them.

Most of them were horribly misshaped by an attempt to sharpen them on the bench grinder. Most of them were ground to a 40-50 degrees instead of the 25-30 degrees that allows them to cut correctly. The picture shows a nice mirror polished bevel.

Going forward, I will be maintaining them. However, please DO NOT attempt to sharpen them on the bench grinder. If you find one that has lost its edge, please make a problem report so it can be re-sharened.

If you are interested in learning how to properly sharpen a chisel or hand plane iron, I will teaching a class on this. Please keep your eye open for the class announcement.

Thank you for doing this! I don’t use them much, but when I do, it’s nice to have a sharp one. I’d be interested in your class.

Those are beautifully sharpened, I’ve got some mistreated chisels that I’d love to learn how to fix up in that class.

Wow! That is a sharp edge. Thanks for doing that, I’ll definitely look forward to learning how. I’m well overdue learning to maintain a tool I reach for so often.
