Does anyone know if there are plans to get the metal-cutting laser machine running? It looks freakin awesome

If this is the large one on the floor next to the metal shop, I believe I was told during orientation last week that it requires a (significant) enclosure for safety reasons. Effectively its own room. So it’s apparently pending someone building such an enclosure before it’s safe to use.

That’s correct @thagale. We’re working on some floorplan updates to figure out how to accomodate the required enclosure. The fiber laser is a class 4 laser, so we need to make sure we’ve got proper safety measures and training in place for it.
Side note, my uncle’s career was operating lasers on a military base for Boeing. He’s retired now and has a fairly early onset of macular degeneration that his doctors have concluded is likely because of not taking appropriate eye safety precautions during his decades working with lasers. Proper safety is very important with machines like these!
