What magnets for an e-reader cover?

I have an eInk tablet/reader (a Boox Go Color 7) and a cover for it. The cover uses magnets to both stick to the reader and to trigger the reader to wake up/sleep.

The cover is kind of terrible otherwise, so I’d like to make a replacement, but I’d like to keep the magnetic functionality. Is there a standard sort of magnet that gets used for this kind of application, or is it just “whatever the manufacturer happened to choose”?

If it makes a difference, the cover is roughly 0.1" thick, so the magnets must be pretty thin.

Thanks!

I had a kindle cover I don’t use so I cracked it open. Not an expert but I think it’s a tiny neodymium magnet, a 7mm circle a little under 1mm thick. I think this is big enough to trigger the kindle’s wake up function, but a separate magnet is used to keep the cover shut. I’ve accidentally triggered the wake up function a few times with weak external magnets, so you probably don’t need much as long as it’s placed properly for your e-reader
Hope this helps!

Thanks, that’s very helpful! I’ve ordered an assortment of neodymium disc magnets to try.

Neodymium are definitely the type for this. Curious how thin you’ll be able to find.

Oh, awesome! That article is a great resource.

“It turns out that the cover doesn’t work nearly as well once you take out the magnets, steel plate, and plastic structural supports.” :joy:
