Maker Camp Counselor (seasonal, Summer 2026)

A parent from last summer said it best: “The lessons he walked away with and experiences he had are life changing. These kids got to interact with teachers who are passionate, knowledgeable and willing to share that with this future generation.” If that sounds like the kind of work you want to do, we want to hear from you!

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead and assist daily camp activities across multiple making disciplines, supporting campers through projects, troubleshooting, and skill-building

  • Supervise campers during activities, transitions, and free-build time while enforcing shop safety rules and area-specific procedures

  • Help with setup, cleanup, check-in, attendance tracking, and other daily logistics

  • Support instructors, volunteers, and partners to ensure smooth program delivery

  • Communicate clearly with campers, families, and staff while representing Asmbly’s values and culture

Please take no offense and you can delete this post if necessary but the City of Austin starts similar jobs at $23 -$26 and hour, all of them grant driven. Other places start around $21. My opinion, you want quality workers, compensate their experience fairly. Maybe the grant doesn’t allow it. I just dont get it!

Thank you Jose, I appreciate your opening here (tone can be tricky in written comms, so this helps). There isn’t anything in the grant that is specific to how people are paid, each organization that receives grant funding has to navigate that themselves balancing going rates in the region and the organization’s own compensation levels. We definitely want to compensate people fairly and we are trying to strike the right balance with the overall budget of the organization and trying to keep prices for members and students reasonable.

One of the other things we added this year with support from another grant is working with a PEO (Professional Employer Organization) for all our employees. They handle our payroll and provide other HR support for employees along with some modest benefits that are typically seen at larger companies (because they represent many small organizations, they’re able to act like a large company from a provider pricing standpoint). We’re also doing work with them to review pay rates and make sure we’re paying all our employees fairly.

Hope this helps provide some context and happy to chat with you more privately if you have other questions or concerns.
