Any tips for connecting the end of one adapter with the base of a smaller one?
I’m afraid I’m going to burn right through them, or not create an airtight seal.

Are you trying to end up with two barbed ends, two threaded ends, or one of each?
These look like brass rather than copper. You can either TIG braze with a silicon bronze filler rod, or if you can get a close fitment or two flat surfaces, solder with a silver bearing solder. It is likely easier and cheaper to purchase a readymade adapter with the right size barbs or threads.
I concur about finding more appropriate parts. With multiple adapters, you can go from one type and size of fitting to another with only screw-together connections.
I did an experiment with similar pieces and created quite a monstrous weld. It would have sufficed, but someone in the shop recommended I just use a similar sized bit of tubing to connect the pieces together. I had a hand slaps forehead moment
Thanks for the reply and you were correct about the type of metal.
