I picked up a jar of this stuff after seeing Louisiana Hobby Guy’s video about it.
Holy smokes! This stuff way surpassed my expectations.
I knew that it was meant to weld acrylic, but was not expecting the strength I got from just resting a piece of 6mm acrylic on its edge and adhering to another scrap perpendicularly.
I assumed that it would surely snap right apart with such a small amount of surface area, and being 90° (no clamps or weight, I just pressed firmly and walked away)
But the bond is so strong, that if I tried any harder to break them apart I would need to put on some eye protection because it would take quite a bit of force.
You’ll notice that the acrylic looks to have been cut with a table saw or something on the edge that I bonded, so it had a little texture, but was very smooth to the touch.
You can see air bubbles underneath, but that was from gluing other scraps surface to surface, and not clamping or doing anything to mitigate the bubbles, so those were to be expected. Oh, and some of my spills are being hidden by the frosted texture, so next time I would be prepared to clamp and wipe my surfaces after application.
But these surface to surface bonds aren’t going anywhere! I’ve been wondering what to use for standoffs on my acrylic signage, and now I’m thinking this stuff solves a lot of my problems
My only complaint is how thin and volatile the liquid is. I had to look on Youtube for how to open the can. The stuff evaporates so fast you just take what you need from the can and immediately close the lid.
I’ve been putting back what I don’t use, because I also got some of the bottles like LAHG recommended for application, and they do not seal well enough to store the chemical.
Several ml of the stuff disappeared over the course of a few hours despite the squeeze bottle being “sealed”
EDIT: It came off with just a little bit of mechanical help, and it was clear that only the high spots bonded, so it’s not as miraculous as I thought, but still promising results.
