Weaponized Plastic Robots - Class

Step into the world of combat robotics and build your own battle-ready bot from the ground up. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll design, assemble, and prepare a small combat robot inspired by the Weaponized Plastic Fighting League (WPFL).
Your robot will feature a 3D-printed chassis, drivetrain, and weapon system, powered by a microcontroller (ESP32-C3) that enables control via WiFi or Bluetooth. You’ll assemble all components, including light soldering on a custom PCB, and bring your robot to life.

This class, and the companion SIG, emphasize practical engineering, iterative design, and learning by doing.

Dedicated SIG sessions will focus on weapon design and fabrication, customization options, and troubleshooting, giving students the opportunity to experiment, refine strategy, and prepare for friendly competition.

This workshop emphasizes practical, hands-on learning across mechanics, electronics, and embedded systems, and serves as an entry point into Asmbly’s Weaponized Plastic League, culminating in a live, bracket-style Battle Day tournament in an arena fabricated by Asmbly community members.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the architecture of a modern robot, including mechanical, electrical, and control systems

  • Assemble and wire a robot powered by a microcontroller (ESP32-C3) and all the required motor drivers, batteries and PCBs

  • Perform basic soldering to complete a custom PCB

  • Understand the fundamentals of wireless control using WiFi and/or Bluetooth

  • Navigate and use tools such as Visual Studio Code, PlatformIO, and GitHub Copilot

  • Modify simple firmware parameters and understand how code interacts with hardware

  • Create or customize simple 3D designs using OnShape to build their own weapon

  • Safely operate and troubleshoot a combat robot

We will be announcing official information about Asmbly’s Weaponized Plastic event soon! This class is one entry point, but this will be a public event where anyone will be free to join the competition, as long as their bot meets the regulations.

This class/event has a companion SIG, open to anyone who is interested! The SIG will be hosted on these dates (more dates may be added to fit demand):

SIG 1 (May 7th): Control Systems (RC vs uC) and basic electronics options

SIG 2 (June 4th): Customization Options and Active Weapon Design and Fabrication

SIG 3 (July 2nd): Troubleshooting and Competition Preparation

We’re getting closer to our April 22nd workshop, and things are starting to come alive.

The firmware for your Weaponized Robots is now ready. Each robot will be powered by an ESP32-C3, giving you full control over how it behaves. You don’t need coding experience to get started, but if you’re curious, you’ll be able to explore, tweak, and improve the firmware as much as you’d like.

Meet our current reference build: ROTATO :potato::robot:
It spins. It whirs. It bravely wobbles into battle with a high-speed airplane motor on top.

Is it the most fearsome robot ever built? Probably not.
Will it absolutely bonk into things with dangerous enthusiasm? Without a doubt.

The best part is this is just the beginning. During the workshop, you’ll design your own weapon, tweak your robot’s behavior, and give it a name that sounds like it belongs on a fight card.

We are less than 2 weeks away from our first workshop and we are now full, but if you want to build your very own plastic fighter, you’ll have your chance to do it in a new workshop on may 23rd again!

We had a very successful Day 1 of Weaponized Plastic Robots. A full squad of 5 ROTATOs has been assembled and they are already showing… personality. Some will spin with purpose, some spin with chaos, all of them are ready for trouble in the upcoming Asmbly fights.

If this thread had you curious, tonight is actually a perfect sneak peek. We’ll be in the Multipurpose Room at 6:00 PM working on software and weapon upgrades, which is where things start getting spicy.

Thanks for sharing this video of the ensuing chaos Angel! We are definitely excited to build our arena and battle for glory (or at least for fun) in the Asmbly Weaponized Plastic Battle Day this summer!

Huge thanks to @cjromb, @Joaquim @bwatt, Josh and Kaitlyn for joining our first Weaponized Plastic Robot workshop!

On the second day we ended up diving deep into weapon design, and it was awesome seeing all the different ideas come to life out of the laser cutter. From creative builds to “let’s see what happens if…” moments, there was a lot of experimentation happening.

Don’t tell anyone, but at some point things escalated into a completely unofficial street fight :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
Let’s just say the robots have stories now.

A few repairs might be needed, but the good news is the bodies held up really well. These bots are resilient and built to keep evolving, so there’s plenty of room to iterate, upgrade, and come back stronger.

We’ll be kicking off a SIG next Thursday, open to anyone interested. Bring your robot if you have one, share ideas, and keep building. More details in the SIG thread.

Quick update for all the Rotato builders… or anyone following a similar architecture :robot:

I’ve gotten a few questions about connecting your Rotato to the serial port, viewing logs, and updating firmware, so I built a small tool to make things easier:

rotato.thehomelab.dev

Just plug your robot via USB-C, open the website, and you can connect directly to the serial port from the browser to see logs like its own IP, for example.

I’ll also be updating parts of the documentation as I get time and as we discover common pain points during builds.

Important note: firmware updates through VS Code + PlatformIO still work perfectly and will continue to be the primary/recommended development workflow. This tool is just meant to make debugging and quick checks easier for everyone.
