Hey all! We’re in need of a volunteer that is either experienced in sewing machine maintenance, or patient and detail oriented to give our Brother 600SE a deep cleaning! This machine is one of the more used in the textiles space, but doesn’t have a regular maintenance schedule currently.
Unfortunately, the only step by step cleaning video on youtube is by someone not well versed in machine maintenance (they pretty much just use a can of air duster then spray oil everywhere). The alternative is this complete teardown video of a limited edition version of the 600SE (otherwise exactly the same minus the star wars stickers).
If this seems like something in your wheelhouse, drop a comment here or send me a message and I’ll help in any way that I can!
I can do that next time I come in ( Wednesday or Thursday) if no one can get to it before then. I just need to know where the preferred oil to use is and if there is anything wrong with the machine I need to troubleshoot as I service it.
Awesome! Thanks for offering to take a crack at it.
The main issue currently is the top thread breaking while embroidering- feels like something has bound an internal mechanism and it’s causing the tension to get wonky.
There’s also an inordinate amount of lint/gunk in the bottom of the half of the machine, and a (not so) healthy amount of thread stuck under the bobbin area.
The oil is in a small container on the white cubby in the right back corner of the room.
Got it cleaned out and oiled. Ran out of time before I got to fully test it. I’ll do that this weekend when I’m on unless someone happens to have time before then.
Somehow the presser foot assembly came undone (it’s right behind the main case of the device and not accessible via the maintenance covers unfortunately), but got that fixed and back together.
