USB Emulation

IDK if this is the correct category, so pls LMK if I should have asked this differently, but I’m trying to follow “https:// github .com/marcone/teslausb/wiki/Hardware” (can’t include links for some reason) to make a custom USB that can control read/write for a dashcam, has anyone done this or know someone who might have? Just trying to plan out my hardware purchases and setup well, never used Raspberry Pi / Rock Pi 4C+ although I do have some experience w/ WSL and planning to learn whatever I need.

Hey Roy — this is the perfect place to ask these questions!

I’ve worked with the Raspberry Pi on custom projects like controllable LEDs and, most recently, a working SIP softphone, though not exactly on video recording. It looks like this repo should give you the information you need to set everything up on the Pi, so I can help you get settled with the hardware set up.

When purchasing a Raspberry Pi, you’ll usually need three things: a Pi board, a microSD card (Class 10 or UHS-I, preferably A1 or A2 rated for better performance), and a power supply (this depends on which board you choose).

To get started, plug the microSD card into your laptop (you may need an adapter) and use Raspberry Pi Imager to install an operating system onto the card. Then, insert the card into the Raspberry Pi and power it on. The first time it boots, it may take a few minutes. After that, future boots usually take about a minute, and it will then be accessible.

If you connect the Raspberry Pi to your Wi-Fi, you can access it from your laptop by viewing and controlling its screen using Raspberry Pi Connect–which I recommend setting up during the imager installer–or by accessing its shell through SSH.

If you need a starting point, I recommend choosing one of the recommended boards on that repo page and buying a basic kit for it. If you plan to save dashcam recordings on your board instead of a server, consider using a powerful board (such as Pi 4) with a large microSD card (64 GB–128 GB) or external storage.

Feel free to ask any questions along the way.

Best, Natanael
