Turner's Exchange

Hey y’all!

I wanted to guage interest in setting up a group to exchange wood blanks, take a month to turn something new, then exchanging the final product at the end. I think this could be a fun way to try out types of turning that we wouldn’t have done otherwise.

A few things I’d like input on:

  1. Are you interested?
  2. Is meeting once per month reasonable?
  3. Would you want to meet in person, or just leave your wood blank somewhere for the recipient to pick up? Could always have an option of an in person meeting, with the option to leave the blank somewhere if you cannot attend.

Thanks y’all!
Drew

Love the idea! Would be happy to start doing this with you and see if people join. What size projects are you thinking?

As someone who has only had two goes at the lathe, I’m not sure anyone—even me—would want something I could produce, however, I’m definitely keen to give it a go.

I call dibs on whatever Michael makes

I am super interested! This even seems to be the kind of thing that could make a sweet SIG. Either way, I’m in!

Sounds like we’ve got some interest! Do ya’ll want to do an inital meet up this week? I’ll be coming by the shop Thursday, and maybe during the weekend. Probably won’t be able to make it by again till mid September.

The weekend works for me…

Respectfully I’ll have to bow out for at least a week or two. But if I can get a time in mid September or after I’m happy to meet up

Thanks for reviving this topic Matthew!

Would mid morning Sunday work? We could each bring a black and exchange it (and Robert, if you wanted to leave a blank somewhere, you could still be part of the exchange). Then maybe in mid September we can meet back up and see what the others made?

Sure thing! I probably won’t be able to come by Sunday between 8-noon. I can probably come by Saturday morning to meet @Glory2God and drop of a blank though.

Just to clarify, I have not taken the bowl turning class yet so I’m limited to handles or sticks lol.

Do you know what they call a boomerang that doesn’t come back?
Yep, a stick :man_shrugging:t3::man_facepalming:t3::man_facepalming:t3::man_facepalming:t3::man_facepalming:t3::man_facepalming:t3::man_facepalming:t3:

Still a million things you can make with spindle turning!

Fancy stick = woodworking
Right?

I sure do have a nice collection of fancy stick art.

I’ll scrounge up a good blank offering and let y’all know where I stash it!

I also can’t do Sunday morning, but I’m happy to participate! I can do a drop and grab sometime asynchronosuly if that is what works best for everyone. We will need a location that works. Any ideas Drew?

Do we want a take a blank/leave a blank kinda setup?

If y’all decide hey take it or leave it, or Meetup, here’s my contribution! I dropped it in the instructor side of the lathe cabinet.

Sounds like asynchronous exchange works best. If y’all want to each label a piece of wood with your own name and drop it in the instructors box over the next few days, we can pick up out of there! Just dropped one off myself.

As for who takes what:

Michael takes Robert’s blank

Robert takes Adam’s blank

Adam takes Matthew’s blank

Matthew takes Drew’s blank

Drew takes Michael’s blank

Let me know if that works for y’all!

May have beat you to it  , Michael already has a nice piece of walnut from me. Too much of a hassle to update the list?

I can pass that blank onto Adam…just let me know so I don’t mess things up.
