Hello!! It was Steward Tuesday here in the ceramics shop and tonight was DOUBLE the fun because fellow steward, Samantha Dameron, was also stewarding tonight! Samantha took the lead on trimming up our beginner wheel pieces. Samantha is originally from Kansas and moved to Austin in 2019. She joined Asmbly two months ago and has been holing up with us here in the ceramics shop the whole time–if you feel inclined to show Samantha what you’re working on in a different shop–do it! To me, one of the great things about Asmbly is unlocking time and skills in all of our awesome workspaces! I’m always wondering what skill I’ll get to learn next
!
Since Samantha took the wheel for trimming pieces, I got to fuss around on the slab roller. The “Light Clay” side of the canvas needed a good sponging because it had a lot of red clay spots that needed cleaned off to prevent transfer. Then, I got deep into it with the slab roller. There were several spots on the rollers where clay had accumulated and dried. This can be prevented by double-checking that your piece is centered on the canvas after each pass and making sure that there is enough canvas to cover your clay completely when it’s being rolled. If not checked, clay can be squeezed out & collects on the rollers. If this happens, it’s the responsibility of the user to clean the clay out of the teeth. It’s more easily done with the slab rollers separated to give you enough space to work, say 2” or more apart. Tonight, I imagined myself a dental hygienist and we did a thorough cleaning. For now, the slab roller is ready to be used for your next project! Please continue to take care of this wonderful machine. We are lucky to have such nice equipment here in the shop & it’s always nice to take a little extra care to make sure everything is functioning at their best!
Anyway, thanks for another relaxing night in the shop!
