This Ruined my Work

Whoever keeps leaving a thick oily like substance (maybe one part of an epoxy with the hardner?) on the workbench has ruined my board- this is NOT COOL!

I’m finding it consistently on the workbench highlighted in the picture below. This morning there was approximately a 4” x 4” pool and several other smaller pools and dribbles across the workbench. I’ve been cleaning up after you, but it’s time for you to take responsibility for cleaning up after yourself.

Hi Michael,

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been dealing with this repeatedly—that’s frustrating. In the future the best place to report issues like this is through the Problem Report form at asmbly.org/problem (or by scanning any of the red QR codes around the space).

Only a small percentage of our membership are active on Discourse, and that very likely excludes the few people not cleaning up after themselves. It is best to report the issue to the admins and have them identify and reach out to the infracting member directly.

Time to check the cameras, especially since it’s not a one time deal.

Michael:
I know you are there early in the morning, but in general, knowing the day and time of a problem is helpful for finding out what caused a situation. And Evan is correct - the Problem Report is the best way to deal with these situations.

If it’s always on the same table, could it be something leaking from above?

I appreciate the thought on this, but it’s definitely not a leak. This is from someone using the table—there are dribbles all over the table and a few larger pools, but not always in the same location.

Just to close the loop here - the source of this issue was identified and the responsible party has been addressed.

Thank you @valerie, I appreciate knowing this.

Similar issues happen on the table with a lot of holes too. (Cannot find it in Problem Report) The glue went into a hole, therefore, the clamp cannot get in.
Maybe we need more signs for no glue on work tables?

Good point, we do not have one of those signs on the MFTs but absolutely need them there! @Snestle made the nice ones on the big work benches and I imagine still has the file to make more for these.

Another issue is that the MFT’s have been coopted by metalshop. Not the best idea with MDF. I’m seeing lots of lubricants, as well as metal shavings. The shavings should always be cleaned up, no matter where. But lubricants/ liquids and MDF is a bad combination.

I definitely agree. I feel a couple of flat top metal carts, dedicated to the metal shop, would definitely help. Especially for anyone working on the tormach. You need space for tools, space for a computer, and a little space for stock. We can’t use the glue-up table. Can’t use the MFTs. We’ve been working off of one of the shop carts, but those are often needed to bring stock into the shop.

I like this for the Tormach work bench and toolbox Tool workbench. This could take over the old tool box. The current toolbox could be repurposed for another area of the shop.

I don’t see where that fits. And for a place to work on your laptop, you need a place for your legs underneath. The MFT tables have that, a full toobox doesn’t.

If we replace the current tool box with this one. We can add a different top that extends out a little so you tuck the knees under

We have dedicated one of the MFT’s (Multifunction table) to the metal shop usage as we barely use one for it’s intended purpose, much less three. Ethan (@mgmoore) has made a melamine top with dog holes on the bottom that fit into the holes on the table for alignment and securely affixing the top in place. Looks great and addresses the issue well.
