Textiles - creating your personal textiles toolbox

The textiles area is nearly ready, and I wanted to mention a set of things you might bring with you when you work in that space. Like in all areas of our shop, there will be versions of these tools in the space for your use, but sometimes it’s nicer to use your own.

This list is based on what I will bring with me.

ALWAYS LABEL YOUR PERSONAL TOOLS

  • Scissors
  • Marking tools (chalk, fabric marker)
  • Tape measure
  • Thimble
  • Pins with pin holder
  • Sewing machine needles - these are a standardized item, with larger numbers corresponding to a larger needle eye - 70/10 or 80/12 is a commonly used size
  • Rotary cutter (or new blades, size 45mm)

Additional note - many of us might have heard the term “fabric scissors” at some point in our lives. And there would often be …consequences if you used those scissors for anything else. Fabric scissors are just ordinary scissors that are never used to cut anything else. They don’t have to be anything special, but if you choose to acquire, buy a new pair, and label them as such.
