Sublimation Advice

Hi all, looking for some advice to get some better results from a sublimation print. I tried printing out this design on a 50/50 cotton/polyester green sweatshirt - this is the first time I’ve printed on a darker background, and the colors in the image are really faded.

I used a sublimation spray and let it dry for 5-10 minutes, and printed using the “Photographic” color profile in Sawgrass. The press was set to 405° for 50 seconds.

I’m wondering if letting the sublimation spray set for ~30 minutes and using the “Vivid” color profile would help, but I’m also wondering whether it might just be an issue with trying to print on dark colors. Any advice?

50/50 often fades like this in my experience.

What you need is a CMYW printer for sublimation. In general they exist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7mAqbpJNkw.

Hey Cam, As Nick said, 50/50 blends can fade a bit, but the darker background color is the biggest culprit here. Unfortunately, darker backgrounds just really change the look of sublimation prints because the backdrop color fades out the lighter print colors.

Yeah, makes sense! And at the textiles meeting, Branislav mentioned that sublimation printing can’t print white, which would have been a lot of my image. I think between the lack of white and the 50/50 blend, sublimation printing isn’t the right solution for this project. :joy: Michael suggested looking into Direct-to-Fabric printing, so I might try that out next.

another option might be to heat-transfer light-colored vinyl then press your sublimation print onto that
