Standing work table?

Hi friends, it’s been a minute!

I’m back in town for a few months and I have a job that I’d love to bring into Asmbly to work on. Is there a standing worktable in the textiles room these days? I only remember the amazing giant worktable in the center but that’s hard to work on for extended periods of time.

Thanks so much,

Sarah

Welcome back!
There isn’t a standing setup that I’m aware of. But not an impossible thing and likely something other folks may be interested in.
What kind of setup are you thinking of?

Probably something like this (the link does work)

Home depot has similar work benches that are manually adjusted. The above one eventually will be an out feed table for the wide belt sander once I get back. I got it in an auction rather cheap. It is going to be on wheels to make it movable. So it could be used anywhere. Except that I dont expect to be back for another month so is no good for Sarah, good to see you back!

My current table is 37” high, 60" x32”. I built it from an IKEA table top on an adjustable frame I already had because the top that came with it was too small.

It’s doesn’t need to be quite that long, but work benches usually aren’t deep enough.

Adjustable is great if desired, but also not necessary.

I’m happy to look around on Craigslist/marketplace and share what I find.

After poking around I realize I do have a setup I could bring in if there’s room for it. 48x32 with adjustable legs. Let me know if you think it could work and we can find time to meet and get it set up.

@Branislav ?

this has a smaller top, but I use this thing at my shop and routinely put a good amount of weight on it. honestly would be great for the woodshop too.

Hey Sarah – good to have you stopping by again! I’m listing some temporary “make it work” options:

There should be enough room for your 48x32 setup between the large cutting table and the leatherworking station (there’s a low table on casters there now, you can move it wherever).

If my estimate of available space there is off, you should be able to use the area where the ironing board sits (between the tables holding the serger and the rest of the sewing machines).

If there is a desire to make this more permanent, I’ll work with you and @sarahmartin to make it happen. We actually met only a few hours ago to talk re-arranging the Textiles setup, so this might be a part of it.

I’m unfortunately leaving town tomorrow afternoon, back on the 29th. If you can wait until then, I’d be happy to meet up at that point. Otherwise, we’ll find someone who might be able to help in the meantime – just let us know here.

Thanks Bran! I signed back up last night and am hoping to start work today. I’ll set up the table and see how it goes for now.

Lol you guys! The big textiles table is already at standing height!

From a different point-of-view, I’ve been sitting at the large CNC working on the top of the spoilboard with my computer. I am doing coding (GCODE and Arduino) and testing for hours. As I sit in a chair my knees are pushed against the end of the CNC, my legs are spread-eagle, and I’m bent over for hours. I think we need a small rollable 3x4’ table in the woodshop. You could say that the woodshop is SRO, but doesn’t need to be.

Bri, this a very fair point and a solid suggestion.
Would table setup that also held the computer—I’m thinking a traditional desk setup—work better? How can we combine all the needs there?

Please throw out your ideas!

Michael, I would like for it to be big enough to hold a computer, mouse and a technical notebook, and still have about 1’ of workspace. I’m just looking for something that we could roll around, fit a single chair beneath, and would be about 28-29" high. Is that what you’re suggesting?

Bri, yes that was what I had in mind. When I was in today, I took a look and got to thinking: what would you say to redesigning the the current tall table that holds the CNC computer and making that lower with additional room to sit at with a personal laptop and the extra room you mentioned?

@Glory2God, sounds good (with wheels). I wonder who has the design files of those current tall (stand-up) work tables that holds the small CNC computer. @valerie or @dannym might know where to point us.

If you’re talking about the desk, the files should be in the Tarking computer.

Thanks Jose, I’ll look into Tarkin’s computer file system. I’d have thought they are on some cloud drive, such as, Google Drive.

@bwatt I sure do! It’s here in this public shared drive SHARED — Projects.

Thanks Valerie!

Bri, let’s try to coordinate a schedule and go over some details. Let me know when the next time you’ll be in.

One thing to consider is building a sturdier bench.
