Staining wood/finish

I have made a coffee table out of Pecan/ hickory. I am trying to color match the wood with side tables that are darker and slightly redder. Is there a way to color match stains? Or just trial and error? I have stock to use in the matching process.
I want to try Rubio as finish (I appreciated the discussion on the walnut finish, in earlier post) So does it make a difference if I use an oil based or water based stain.
I undestand Sherwin Williams match stains?
Any advice/insight/experience would be greatly appreciated.

Rubio has some tinted stains, and pre-stain tinting. If you have a cutoff scrap, do your experimentation there.
