I’ve thrown out the remains of several broken electrical reels recently. In the center of these, there is a tight coil of spring steel, over 25 feet long. This is potentially very useful for many things, so I am not throwing them immediately away; they are up for grabs. But be aware that coiled spring steel can be very dangerous; it can uncoil violently over a large area. I wouldn’t even try removing it from the holder indoors. Thus, they are still inside those closed containers. I put them in the large red steel recycling bin. (If they’re not claimed before I take the recycling away in a few months, perhaps I’ll arrange an uncoiling demonstration.)
I’m trying to understand the scale of the spring steel in the picture. What is the reel diameter, and what’s your guess of the width of the spring steel strap.
The plastic reel fills the entirety of the body of the overhead electrical reels, about 12”. That means the outer coils of the spring are about 6”. The spring metal is about 1” wide.
OK, thanks, and I’m not interested in them, just wanted to know their dimensions.
I grabbed the DoAll’s wide broken bandsaw blade and have been trying neat things with my MOPA laser on them. Those are a sort of spring temper.
I think I want that spool. I’m not sure why, but the laser can cut do fine cuts into arbitrary shapes so I’m wondering if there’s something interesting there you could do with springy metal
There are two reels in the red steel recycling bin, yours for the taking.
