Would love to be able to have ceramics at Asmbly, I think it would be a ton of fun and I have so many projects that would make for great classes.
These are amazing! Where do you do them now?
I have a shop in a garage.
My girlfriend has been looking for some where to get into throwing (we took a few guided classes). I know she’d love an affordable place to do it like ASMBLY if that were an option.
Same! I would even pay extra for access to the ceramics space if we had it, it’d surely be cheaper than access to another studio offsite. I know we don’t have a lot of room at the moment, but I think we could find some space. Perhaps expand into the vacant spaces on either side of ASMBLY at the moment
What would you think was a reasonable price if we did open up into the larger space and include ceramics? @gordoa40
Depends on the amenities offered, whether there’s storage, firing available, etc, but I think $50-100 extra would be reasonable. I know other studios are up to $500+/mo, so if it had to be more then I’d understand, but as a novice I may not be interested for that price. I’m sure it would fill up quick though. Not sure if my thoughts are shared by anyone else, but I’d love to see it happen somehow!
I was recently back in Dallas and swung by the Dallas Makerspace. This is their area. Its very popular there, definitely their highest use area, maybe tied with woodshop but honestly I think it gets more use. Certainly many more classes.
Wow! Just WOW ! @HannaKessler your work is amazing and so beautiful
If Asmbly ever added a ceramics area, I’d definitely sign up and participate. I’m fond of saying that I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, but I’m very creative. This genre seems to require a healthy amount of both and would definitely push me.
I hope you’ll continue to post pictures of your work!
Michael
These are gorgeous @HannaKessler! Excited to see more of your recent work in person at the Maker Market
We will definitely be making ceramics happen at Asmbly. It’s been on Asmbly’s list from day 0 and my personal list for several years. It’s too early to talk specifics, but I’m confident 2025 is the year of clay and fire
So awesome, I really love the blue/gold one!
For reference, The Contemporary offers ceramics classes at varying levels:

I took “Beginning Wheel Throwing” this summer and for about $300 you get 6 classes (3 hours each) + glazing/firing for the pieces you make. It’s a pretty good deal overall.
Of course, it’s easier for them – they’re already set up with two massive kilns (soda and reduction) and a few smaller, electric ones.
Those are pieces!
It would be amazing to get a ceramics area in ASMBLY! I was talking to my wife about how we’ve been wanting to learn and have access to a kiln. Happy to support if folks are interested in equipping the area (both financially and with labor).
If there is a ceramics firing space, then it would be theoretically easy to also set the space up for lost wax casting as both use types of kilns. I havent ducked into the ACC ceramics so i dont know if it is the same model or not, just that they are next to jewelry for the exahust system.
Fire safety clasesses though…
Saw this post on marketplace today. Seems like a good price on these specific wheels (I’m seeing ~$600 new)
Only concern is if they’re robust enough. They are 1/4 hp and can center up to 25 lbs of clay. I know professionals typically like a higher hp (similar to how most turners prefer big bird over the other two lathes).
Still would likely be good enough to teach classes with, but I am no expert! I had just looked into throwing wheels a while back.
Oh! These are beautiful!!
This is not a good deal and not a good wheel for long term use. I own one, its ok. I would definitely recommend the space invest in brents.
Glass slumping is another use for a kiln
