I’m planning to do a cabinetry project at the space using Mozaik. I have a good bit of experience with this software and a great feature of Mozaik is that you can launch your project into SketchUp from within Mozaik to preview and export your design as a 3D file.
On the public computer in the lobby with our Mozaik seat, it looks like this integration isn’t currently set up. The setup for this is pretty simple and just involves adding SketchUp to the computer and using a wizard inside Mozaik to link the two softwares.
Using Mozaik in the past I’ve seen this done with an older version of SketchUp (SketchUp 8) that doesn’t require a license to download and works great for this.
Since it seems users can’t install software directly onto these computers, I just wanted to see what the process is to get something like this added. I’d be happy to help with the setup!
I sent a message to IT@assembly.org some time ago but haven’t heard back yet. Just posting here to see if anyone else might be able to point me in the right direction.
Thank you for the patient persistence on this @Sapipulani! Just want to acknowledge that your email was received (guessing autocomplete misspelled the address in your post here). I bumped it internally to see if I can help you get some movement here.
The public computers do actually allow users to install software, however it will get wiped when they’re re-imaged every night.
Meaning if you needed this done quickly, you are able to install sketchup and complete the integration, it would just need to be done any time you wanted to use it.
A fair bit of software needs updating on the image of the public computers though (ie fusion and bambu studio), compatibility issues are starting to rear their head.
Ah ok, this is good to know. Previously, I attempted to download and run the .exe for SketchUp 8 on that computer but the .exe would not run. I then ran the same .exe on my own computer and had no issues. I assumed there was a restriction on the computer stopping me. I’ll go back up and try this again this week and I’ll speak up if I’m still having trouble with this.
I’ve finally had a chance to get back up to the space and take another stab at this.
I still haven’t had any success downloading Sketchup onto the public computer with Mozaik on it. However, as a test I did try to download a different software (LibreCAD) and was able to do so with no problems. But when trying to add Sketchup I had no luck.
I’ve linked a short video below with a screen recoding of myself trying to download Sketchup onto the makers space computer followed by another clip where I run the same .exe file on a personal computer.
In the clip you’ll see that the attempt on the makers space computer goes through a few screens in the setup wizard but wont actually begin downloading. I cut the clip here after just a moment to keep the video brief but in practice the download wizard is never able to begin downloading. In the second clip on my personal computer you can see that the download starts right away and finishes with no issues.
I’m not sure if there is something set up on the lobby computer that is keeping this from installing or if the issue lies somewhere else. I’m not necessarily looking for a direct solution here so much as a path forward or someone who may be able to help out with this.
Once again, I’m grateful for any help here - Thanks!
Not a problem, I should be available Monday through Friday next week as well. If you’re available any evening next week I’d be glad to come up and take a look at this.
Hi @Sapipulani! I’m in the shop today trying to get this set up for you. Apologies for the delay. Thank you for the added context re: the installer failing, that’ll help me debug on my end.
Hey @taylor.gates, this is great to hear! Thanks so much for your help on this! Hopefully this coming week I’ll make it over to the space and give this a go. I’ll speak up here once I’m able to do that. Thanks as well to everyone else in this thread that’s helped out here too!
Hey, just wanted to say that I’ve just gone up to the space and booted this up. Everything seems to be working perfectly - thanks again for the help on this!
