Sewing EVA foam

I’ve got some EVA foam pieces that I want to stitch to fabric. Has anyone done this with any ASMBLY machines? I’m reading that a leather needle and long stitch length should work. Looking for some advice before I risk it.

Can you describe more about the final look you desire? Do you want to encase the foam in fabric, attach two pieces of foam with fabric, etc?

I’ll see what process photos I can find from Spy Kids if they turn out to be helpful. Almost every piece had layers of foam and fabric in different applications. It depends on the desired outcome.

I will say sewing through the EVA is tricky depending on it’s thickness because it will perforate and weaken it.

Send pics of what you’re trying to do and maybe we can help!

For a wrestling show, I’m making three sets of arm and shin guards from 3mm EVA (not the picture 5mm and 2mm.) One set will be worn in a match but doesn’t need to survive the combat.

I want to attach velcro straps to the shin guards (to be worn over boots) and tack the arm guards to cut off socks. The EVA will be sealed with modge podge and painted with acrylic paint.

Great. For all of this, we would use glue. possibly sew the Velcro to the fabric before glueing to the EVA but super 77 or I can look for other options. Honestly pva glue might work too.

Any closures like buckles or Velcro we stitched on by hand. You don’t need a special needle, but heavyweight button thread is the ticket there.

Sometimes I did like envelope separate pieces between two layers of fabric by stitching in between. In those cases I used a basting glue to hold the fabric in place so as not to gum up my needle like super 78 would. Then just carefully steer between the edges.

Does any of that help?

A lot of these are either covered in fabric and then glued to fabric based or stitched around the.edges (not through the EVA) as described, or even riveted on.

Thank you. I think I’ll cut a cotton backing and glue the EVA to that.

I think contact cement might be your best bet. Barge or weldwood, etc.

Thanks again! The Super 77 proved to be the best option for these.

After the ceramics party some of y’all should come see us at Austin Beer Works, Sprinkle Valley (Springdale Rd.) Our free wrestling show runs from 7-11 ish.
