September 2024 CNC SIG Recap

All,

Here is the recap for the September 2024 CNC Special Interest Group (SIG) Event Extravaganza! The Zoom link with the entire recorded meeting is at the end, and Luke (@jamesfreeman’s little James!) joined us!

Al made this incredible book holder using epoxy and scrap wood, but it doesn’t look like scrap now. He poured clear epoxy all over it and made it shine like nothing I’ve seen before, and when you look at it with a flashlight it looks like the wood is in suspended animation. All I have to say is…WOW!

@bwatt then showed us how he’s working with @stepho to help showcase her art. Her art is below, along with the structures to hold it in place.

@bwatt next showed us his 3D printed dog holes that he uses to secure stock on the bed. The best thing about them is that they are replaceable if your bit strikes them, which makes a big difference compared to using metal dog holes!

@jamesfreeman shared with us his laser cut work

Next, @SteveW showed us what he’s been prepping for Maker Faire in November–we’re really looking forward to having everyone see how much he’s grown. It’s been truly astonishing to see his journey. And look at the carnival game he made–DAMN!

And lastly, @TravisGood showed us the reasonably priced tool he’s been using as a makeshift CNC machine for the past several years. It’s a good entry-level tool that allows you to get into home CNCing at an entry-level price point. It’s called MaslowCNC, and he goes into detail about it in the Zoom link below (you can skip around to see where he’s discussing it). He makes a convincing base that it’s hard to find a bigger bang for your buck if you’re slowly trying to figure out if home CNCing is right for you.

As a reminder, the next CNC SIG is at 9 am on Sunday, October 6th at Asmbly . We’re continuing the theme of preparing for the upcoming Maker Faire in November. Remember, this is an event where you get to show off your stuff and test the waters to see if you can turn your creation into SALES!

Looking forward to seeing everyone on October 6th, or the first Sunday of the month (which is when we host our monthly CNC SIG events)!
