Seeking CNC Volunteer to Assist with Ceramics Studio Project

Hi All!

The Ceramics Studio needs a place to store bags, jackets, etc. while members/students are in the studio. I’ve mocked up a plan for a cubby system to go by the back Ceramics entry.

I took the CNC class a while back but haven’t worked on a project yet, so I could use a helping hand finalizing the design and creating the cutpath file. If you’re interested in helping with this project, please let me know — I can offer volunteer hours for your assistance.

Below is my mockup of the cubby system:

So many questions…

  • How deep are the cubbies?
  • What is your assumed thickness of the material? Ans: Assume 0.75"
  • Are you expecting to use plywood, nice plywood (two good surfaces), baltic birch (classic quality), something else?
  • Are corner butt joints acceptable or do you want something fancier / stronger?
  • Do you want the fronts of all pieces to be covered with veneer to hide the plywood “look”?
  • What sort of finish: stain, paint, natural, etc.?
  • When assembled it is one unit that you want to hang on the wall, or do you want bottom extensions to stand it on the floor, but be mounted to the wall.

It looks to me like you have:

  1. two vertical edges (left & right) w/ grooves for horizontal edges and dividers
  2. two horizontal edges (top & bottom) w/ grooves for vertical edges and dividers
  3. four verticals dividers w/ egg crate joint for horizontal dividers
  4. three horizontals dividers w/ egg crate joint for vertical dividers
  5. one back nailed onto edges and dividers

So you have five unique shapes to cut. Is that’s what you are assuming or picture in your mind?

Egg crate joint:

I’d recommend Melamine. Dakota has melamine faced plywood (white or black). It’s a tough surface and no painting required.

Hi Stanton, I have cut files for a (previously open source) locker system from Opendesk. The finished product would look like this:

Let me know if it would be helpful to pass the files over to you or whomever takes this on.

This would also be easy to knock out in Mozaik

Let’s use Mozaik!

Thanks everyone for the questions/feedback!

@bwatt

  • How deep are the cubbies?
Total depth is 11 inches so it is flush with the little column on the left side of the placement photo.
  • What is your assumed thickness of the material? Ans: Assume 0.75"
Yes, my plan was to use for .75" material for the framing/shelves. I figured the backboard could be .50" or .25" possibly. If it needs to be .75" that works too.
  • Are you expecting to use plywood, nice plywood (two good surfaces), baltic birch (classic quality), something else?
I was planning on using nice plywood or baltic birch but I am also open to the idea of melamine as @atwatsoniii suggested.
  • Are corner butt joints acceptable or do you want something fancier / stronger?
I think butt joints are probably fine. It doesn’t have to be fancy-- just functional and sturdy.
  • Do you want the fronts of all pieces to be covered with veneer to hide the plywood “look”?
  • What sort of finish: stain, paint, natural, etc.?
I don’t really mind either way. If we used baltic birch then I would say no need. Melamine-- it would probably be nice to have veneer.
  • When assembled it is one unit that you want to hang on the wall, or do you want bottom extensions to stand it on the floor, but be mounted to the wall.
I think ideally mounted to the wall. I factored in like a 5 inch clearance with the floor I believe. We have to mop a lot in our area and we recently had some rain water penatrate through the door in that area-- so I wouldn’t want it resting on the floor. We could do legs though for like additional support.

@ewei Ah cool! If you want to send me the files through slack or email, I’ll take a look at them and see if they’d work.

@atwatsoniii I am down to use Mozaik for this project. I’ve watched a tutorial before on basic cabinet design in Mozaik, but I wouldn’t really know how to approach this project. Do you have experience with Mozaik?

I just completed making a set of cabinets for my laundry, so I have some experience. I’m not an expert.

For Mozaik, I’d suggest that the height be reduced to 47” so the back can be made in one piece. I’m not sure of a good way to deal with that otherwise.

If you want to do it with Mozaik, let’s all meet.

Hi Stanton, Just by luck I’m working on a similar project. Attached is a SVG file that can be cut on plywood. It’s designed for 0.75 inch thickness and has five cubby holes across and four vertical. Now comes why I came online searching for help: I would like to create a cardboard mockup for my project, and I can create one for the cubby holes for you as well, however, I don’t know where to get cardboard that is this size.

If you’re looking for large cardboard sheets up to 4’ x 8’, Grainger has them, but if you’re looking for .75 inch thick cardboard (does that exist?) you might be better off with foam board

This would be a great Mozaik demo chance!

I did some fumbling around on Mozaik and I think I have the general idea of how it works. I made some modifications to my design (I noticed the backboard constraint). We didn’t really need 20 cubbies anyway. This is my mockup:

I’m not sure if blind dados work on the CNC? I know it can’t cut a flat end in the groove. I also can’t seem to get the optimiser to recognise that I changed my design-- it appears to be trying to optimise the old parts. I would be happy to meet to go over this project. My schedule is pretty wide open, so whenever works for anyone who wants to meet up. I appreciate it!

That looks great. Do you want to meet Tuesday evening? I can help you through the rest of the setup. Looks like you have a good start.

I can be there Tuesday evening! Just let me know what time-- thanks Al!

Post the time here too, because I might like to join you.

Lets do 6pm Tuesday

Sounds good, I’ll be there!

The focus needs to be Stanton and Al, because of the use of Mozaik. Please tell me when you’ll meet again and I’ll be there to help however I can.
