Rust Removal Tools

There’s a fair amount of rust on my truck bed. It’s not in a dire state where it would be causing problems, however cosmetically and to do a little future proofing, I’d like to clean it up and roll some Herculiner on it.

I only have a wire wheel for an angle grinder and an air compressor strong enough to hold a sandblast for maybe 10 seconds.

I figure with those tools it would take me a full day to clear off all the rust from this and make it liner ready.

Do we have any tools in Asmbly that could help me do this a little faster?

Or are there other options I could consider home?

I would search for a sandblasting service. Prep work is the biggest difference between bed liner lasting or not. That looks to be a ton of work.

Just a quick Google search, I have no experience with them.

I’ve had some success in the past using evap-o-rust gel brushed onto a trailer. It doesn’t work miracles like letting a part sit overnight in a big tub of the stuff, but might be worth picking some up to experiment with if professional sandblasting is cost-prohibitive.

I would look at chemical rust metal converter. It is a light acid that can sit overniight.

Covering with plastic can help with larger surfaces like this! Slows down evaporation / needless oxidization.

Ospho is another option (works a bit faster) but would still likely need physical surface prep.

I was thinking the same - a wire wheel on the worst of it, rinse and degrease, and then automotive spray rust converter. It will turn it black. Then another wash, and bed liner spray should be fine.

Granted I really only see this done on the underside where people are less picky about specific appearance.

Thank you for the suggestions everyone!

I’m going to reach out for consults first.. I don’t have much time to take this on myself at the moment. I think if I can make all the rust go bye bye I’ll feel much more confident about setting a weekend aside for paint and liner.

That’s not rust, it’s character!

I got a quote for about $700 to remove all the rust from the bed in 1-2 days time from that link you sent, James.

He education me about the Rust-Oleum Mega Can, too. It’s a larger spray can and the spray fan is massive! I could get the rust removed and with a few cans coat the whole bed in a few minutes.

The next question i have is how long all this would last and if I should or could put a liner on top of this.
