Resolved - Resaw Bandsaw is Red Tagged

It turns out that the wheel that moves the blade guard is broken. Likely broken by trying to turn it while the lock was engaged.

Time to repair is unknown.

I think is time to change the name from “Big Grizzly Band Saw” to “Red Tag Band Saw.” It spends more time red tagged than functional. Lol!

Here’s what happened. Cast aluminum housing, holding the worm gear was broken. When the wheel is forced, the casting fails.

Same failure mode as last time. I believe we have an additional cast aluminum housing (they seem to be the same for all three bandsaws, as well as the table tilt mechanism), we will need to pull the plastic grub screws off the current broken one.

I have mostly made a cad file of the housing. I will check about machining it. I have some things on my plate that are ahead in the project queue though.

Cool. We’ll keep the current one. Another thought is if we can put an insert in it, replacing the casting in that area. I have no idea if that’s workable.

Turns out. I have a spare of the broken part. I will leave it on the saw.

I was also speaking with @ewei. He suggested welding the cast al and adding reinforcement to the side wall. We would machine a new hole afterwards

Excellent. Thanks, Joe. I’ll be back tomorrow to work on it more. We’ll keep the broken one for you.

@ewei wants to take a crack at the broken part.

Hopefully we will have this rebuilt on Friday.

To be clear. The 2nd Al casting that I brought back belongs to the space. I was borrowing it to make a cad file.

Hey Charlie, is this still on track to be completed today?

Probably not. The repair parts do not include some nylon set screws that are required to stabilize the lift bar. The set screws are not on the parts diagrams. After reassembling the saw, the lift bar moves too much. We have 2 of the 4 screws required. @BillM might have an ETA on those parts.

Ok. Thanks for the update.
