[Resolved] 2025-03-20 Metal Lathe - Brake not working sufficiently

A warning on the metal lathe: something came loose along the brake rod during class the other day, and now even fully depressing the brake barely engages it. Meanwhile, the electronic cutoff is again not releasing in the default brake position that the spring returns to. These are straight-forward to fix but do take some effort. In the meantime, I would avoid using the brake; it’s the preferred stopping mechanism normally but not now.

I took a look at this today and I think I’ve found the problem. There’s a roll pin that connects the brake pedal spindle to the collar which then connects to the brake and cutoff switch and this pin has come loose. I tested the mechanism by temporarily inserting an allen wrench into the hole for the pin and the pedal regained tension and return. (I didn’t, however, want to operate the lathe with the allen wrench in place so I haven’t fully verified that this is the issue.)

I’ll be at Asmbly on Monday evening and beforehand, I’ll swing by Breed and pick up some roll pins in various sizes. If you’re around, maybe we can take a look at it together and then implement the fix.

We do have a kit of roll pins in the stewards closet. Unsure of the sizes, they might be on the small side. I think there is both a metric and standard kit IIRC.

Good call Al. Sanjay was able to use one of the pins from the closet to repair the brake. Many thanks to Sanjay for doing this.
