Resin 3d printing?

Hey y’all. I’m at ASMBLY this afternoon and would love to do a couple test prints using clear resin. I haven’t used resin printers before, though I’m a veteran with FDM printing. I also saw there are no current resin printing classes scheduled.

Is anyone able to meet up with me sooner than the next class and help me do a resin print of my chess pieces?

Thanks!

Will

You just missed a class on Monday. The space doesn’t stock clear, so you’d need to buy the resin.

Thanks for getting back to me. I’m happy to buy the clear resin. Do you have a suggestion for getting that sooner than later? I’m in the prototyping phase and trying to move quickly and would appreciate (with beers or similar) any help/input anyone has that I’m able to use with working on this project. Planning to launch by the end of October!

Hi Will,

We’ll be adding more Intro to Resin 3DP classes soon, we generally run one per month. In the meantime, you can always request a private class. These cost more than the regular classes (unless you recruit some friends to take it with you!) but are more flexible from a scheduling standpoint.

If you want to go that route, just email us at classes@asmbly.org.

You can also attend our 3D Printing volunteer day to meet the stewards and members who keep these tools up and running, and potentially pick their brains. These are held the third Sunday of every month, 11:30am-2:30pm.

I’ve had good results with Elegoo’s ABS-like 3.0+ Translucent resin. Some trouble with warping across a 160mm+ part, but good for smaller parts. I haven’t tried topcoating or polishing to get it optically clear.

That looks amazing and I don’t actually want optically clear! Those are basically perfect for what I need:

Would you be willing to help me print out a set of these in the near future? I’m happy to buy you some beers/pizza/whatever and talk for awhile. I know this guy with a cool smart chessboard…

Sure, I can help you with that, but I’m out of town for the weekend.

Someone at Asmbly resin printed a chess set in translucent red and another color recently. Might be worth asking around.
