Reshaping a ferrite ceramic magnet

Hello,

Does anyone have thoughts on how I might reshape a ferrite ceramic magnet? It’s currently 3.5cm x 1.75cm x 0.75cm and I would like to thin it down to 3/8cm and possibly cut a cylinder from it. It’s going inside a pin cushion.

I don’t think you’ll have much luck with that. Those kind of magnets are cast and sintered, they’re extremely hard (north of 45 Rockwell usually) and brittle. You might be able to work it with diamond tooling or grind it slowly, but generally you’re better off just buying one already in the shape you want.

don’t know if it’s helpful, but there are three small magnets stuck to the lost and found, fairly strong ones

Take apart an old hdd and there’s a pretty strong magnet in there, it’s usually a dumb shape so that’s a perfect use for it

Also, if you grind a powerful rare earth magnet, the dust is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE. About like magnesium powder. And if you grind just a bit more aggressively, you can get a spark.

Also, it takes like 3 months to grow back eyebrows.

Thanks all. The ones in lost and found are perfect for what I need!
