Red Tag - Saw Stop #1 - 2024-12-18

SawStop #1 is red tagged. We are out of cartridges (and possibly blades) after several recent activations.

What ever happened to the rule that the person that activated the cartridge is responsible to source both items from whatever store (Woodcraft, Rockler, Dakota, Home Depot, etc.)? Also, who is keeping the cartridges to mail to Sawstop Co.? If it was actual “skin contact” activated, they will send a new cartridge free of charge. At the very least they send feedback of what they think activated the cartridge. From what i know, they havent bought new blades, there is supposed a stack of re-sharpened ones on the wall to the left of the door. One more thing, who has the key? When activated, the codes (if any) should be attempted to be read to make sure there is no equipment malfunction.

That rule was changed about two years ago. Everyone who activates it has to pay for it through our website, but we started keeping cartridges and blades on hand so we could get back up and running immediately. We used to have a delay like this every time anyone triggered it. This time our inventory was a bit low and there were a couple of triggers in succession, so it caught us off guard.

The cartridge for Wednesday’s activation is in the stewards closet in the box where the new cartridges were kept. It was almost certainly from a contact with metal. I forgot to ask for the cartridge for the activation on Tuesday; I will ask what they did with it.

I didn’t know about the re-sharpened blades, because they weren’t with the other blades and new cartridges. I would suggest that the general purpose blades we use, both new and re-sharpened, should all be stored with the cartridges, and that the non-general purpose blades we have should be culled of non-functional blades, clearly labeled as to their special purpose, then stored near but not with the other general purpose blades.
