Question for welders

Welders, when using an angle grinder on your welds and pieces, do you prefer to use a battery powered or corded angle grinder? Or would you like to go with a pneumatic drive?

The battery powered angle grinders are easier to maneuver, but people tend to burn through the battery life really fast. A corded angle grinder might be a bit more powerful, and it doesn’t require stops for battery changes, but you have to work around the cord. Pneumatics have an even larger hose to work with, but the tool itself is much smaller and lighter and usually spins up faster. (You can assume that there are power and air drops right above the working area.)

I would most prefer to use a:

  • Battery-powered angle grinder
  • Cord-powered angle grinder
  • Pneumatic (air-powered) angle grinder

I ask because I’m planning to have at least one angle grinder dedicated to each welding bay in the new space, in addition to the three (2 battery, 1 cord) we have now.

I prefer the battery powered model b/c there’s no cord to keep outta the way for safety. I do, however, also use a pnuematic angle grinder for some jobs but always bring my own tool for this and would only need ready air.

I would like an upgraded angle grinder. A Dewalt 60v please?

Please don’t add pneumatic. They are loud.

When I’m welding, I typically have three angle grinders set up: a Dewalt 4-1/2” corded grinder with a hard wheel, a Dewalt battery grinder with a flap sanding wheel, and a Proxon 2” mini angle grinder for detail work.

I usually use my own corded grinder, but I would not want to lose access to the pneumatic or battery tools.
