Question for the Metal Makers

Hi! I came across this handrail downtown. Do you think it is difficult to make? Looks like 2 bends and 2 welded uprights, seems simple but I’m sure I’m missing something. I would love to collaborate/pay another member to help me make one like this and one a bit shorter. - thanks!

You are correct that is 2 bends and 2 welds. @Andres79 is building a bender that could bend that. It would be worth it to collaborate on the project to help make this. The welds are probably beveled, welded, and then ground smooth. I would practice doing inside corner joints to make the best looking weld as possible. Check out Westbrook for metal.

Even if you couldn’t bend it, that would be fairly easy to make just welding and smoothing as @JoeN suggests. 2nd for @Andres79 for help.

Yeah I used to make those when I was a fabricator at Austin Iron. We would start by making angled cuts of the steel then bevel the ends so that enough weld would get into the joint. Then jig up the piece so they fit the way the bends are designed. Weld out. Then grind and blend till smooth.

You could also make those bends but it’s a lot more of a challenge to get the right angles you want. At least with the press break I’m making that is.

Let me know if you want to discuss further. I can help you out with this project.
