Print your design for free

Makers!

Elegoo has recently sponsored us with a brand-new resin 3D printer (Saturn 4 Ultra) and some resin(standard and tough) to go with it. To share this opportunity with you, we’re offering free 3D printing for fun and creative resin projects.

If you’d like to participate, share your design in this chat, and we’ll print the best ones until we run out of resin.

Well since nobody else is pitching theirs

A while ago, @bwatt was generous with his time and designed a battery cover replacement for one of my silly calculators.

In fact, I have a couple of different versions. I’d love to be around for the print – it’s been a while since I took the course.

Hi Alex,

I have some small parts (approx .375"x.75") and I’d love to see the resolution and fidelity that’s possible with this printer as well as the difference in hardness and flexibility between the different types of resin. I tried to include images here but couldn’t (maybe becuase I’m a new poster?). Let me know how I can share the details with you if these sound like good candidates.

Thanks,
Sanjay

@SanjayM I just manually bumped up your trust level so you should be able to post pictures now. (Discourse has some built in features to help curtail spam bots in open forums like ours  )

Thank you, Valerie!

Adding pics. These parts are approx. 0.5"-0.75" tall.

What is resin printing for, is it to make molds?

Hi Felipe. Resin printing is a general-purpose 3D printing technology. It can be used for molds (I know one member uses a wax-based resin for casting silver jewelry), but it’s used for all kinds of things.

Resin is great for very fine detail. People often use it to print miniatures for games or parts that need to be very precise. You can see some samples of extremely detailed models in the 3D printing area. Most of the models in matte gray are resin prints. I recently used the resin printers to make inserts for some drainage holes in my porch with a mesh coarse enough to let water through, but fine enough to stop mosquitoes. I tried printing these on a filament printer, but the resolution was just not good enough.

Downsides to resin printing: smaller build volumes (our largest resin printer allows 218 x 122 x 220mm, while our smallest filament printer allows 250 x 210 x 210), fewer material choices, complications when you want to use more than one material in a print, and a requirement to do post processing.

Here’s a really cool model: a chess pawn that mechanically promotes itself to a queen
