Prereq for box making class

Do I need to have taken the woodshop safety class prior to attending the box making class? I was interested in the class on Wednesday, but I have not taken woodshop safety (although I am registered for the class on the 19th). Thanks for any clarifications!

As far as I know, it is not strictly required. Tagging @AJStow and @Kasper for confirmation.

Hi Austin, there are no prerequisites for the class. I estimate that about 30% of attendees have not taken wood shop safety, you will be in good company.
I recommend that you take wood shop safety first if you have little experience in the wood shop. Box class has alot of content to cover in three hours. I think it works better if some of the content is a review from wood shop safety.
Again it’s not required.

If the class requires use of wood shop equipment, how are people who have not taken the wood shop safety class allowed to use the equipment? I was under the impression that the wood shop safety class is a hard requirement, and it should be. Can we get clarification on this?

According to the Member Handbook, the wood shop safety class must be completed before anyone can use the machines in the woodshop. There is a complete list of the tools at this link: Member Handbook - Asmbly Wiki

Here’s is a screenshot of the page:

They’re only allowed to use equipment in the class under the supervision of the instructor. They would not be able to use the shop outside of the class without taking Woodshop Safety.

Interesting…. Thank you @valerie for clarifying this.

Fun fact about this box class — it’s a very popular project class for people that don’t ever join as members and are just interested in trying out some woodworking. Pretty cool and always exciting when we can have classes that pique people’s interest to try out a new craft!
