Polymaker ABS Filaments

Has anyone successfully made an ABS print with the Polymaker filaments available in the lab on the Prusa XL? I need to use the XL for a multi-filament print and have done a few tests with it. The first test (which used the Generic ABS profile) warped, so I adjusted the settings a bit to be closer to those from KISSlicer, and none of the prints stuck to the bed (even with the bed temp at 115).

I’m open to any recommendations, I may order Prusa recommended ABS filament this week

If you’re referring to the filament in the Up For Grabs bin, the ABS is pretty old and has not been kept sealed. At the least I’d put it a filament dryer for quite some time before attempting a print with it.

Did you pre-heat the bed for a while at 115 before starting your print?

In general, the XL is not a great choice for filaments that require higher temperatures because it’s not enclosed and therefore doesn’t have great heat control. You can try setting up the plastic divider to semi-enclose it, but it’s still not great.

If you need multiple ABS filaments, Poseidon, the fully-enclosed BambuLabs printer, might be a better bet. It looks like there are some spaces available in the class at the end of the month: Asmbly | Bambulab P1S: Techniques

If you’re not referring to material in the Up For Grabs bin, there is no filament for general use at Asmbly. There is a bin of filament that is exclusively for Steward internal use (eg. printing bandsaw inserts, laser organizers, etc.), and some filament exclusively for class use. Both of those should have something written on the spool that says what it is.

I meant the filament in the Up For Grabs bin, but I also have my own Polymaker filament that had the same issue.

I did pre-heat the bed. The only issue I can think of is that I skipped the 15min stabilization because I didn’t have that much time in my print session.

I could give that a try.

I’d have to look into that, how is the quality of those prints?

I’ve been happy with the print quality on Poseidon. It makes very precise, smooth prints. I haven’t actually tried ABS on it because I’ve been focusing on ASA as an alternative.

I have seen a higher failure rate on Poseidon than on the Prusa printers, but part of that is that I’m trying more challenging materials.

I’ve had to resort to some big brims and long pre-heats (30 min+) to avoid the kind of warping that you describe.
