Planing sapele / African mahogany

I’m working on a project in solid sapele (a variant of African mahogany). It’s gorgeous, but I’ve read that it can give some planers some trouble. Anyone have experience?

I don’t strictly need it perfectly planed, but I do at least want to smooth out a rough-sawn face of a ~40" plank of 6/4 wood. Alternatively, the belt sander might do the job well enough? It’s just rough enough that hand-sanding would take an absurd amount of time because the wood is so hard.

The Shelix head in our planer should be able to handle it. Just keep your cuts shallow and watch for tearout.

The drum sander would take forever
