Padauk split along the grain while turning

There was a void/crack and I tried turning it anyway. I snagged my gouge and it split more. Can I fix this with resin/pressure pot or wood glue?

Did you already start thinning the walls, or is this a deep crack going into a thick block? My instict would be to sink Tightbond III into the crack as deep as possible (potentially usiong pressurize air to blow it further in) and clamping overnight. If you’ve already thinned the walls, you could try filling with black CA glue, wood glue and clamping would leave a less noticable defect however.

I had started to thin the walls. I think the air compressor + glue is a great idea. I can probably just hold a paper towel on one side to let air through and block any glue from flying out.

Please wear a face shield if you’re using compressed air. Myself i would go with a thin CA. Then medium CA if you can clamp and close the gap. If clamping wait at least overnight before tooling. If you can’t close the gap with clamping, use epoxy colored with a drop of black acrylic paint or whatever color suits you. If you want to get creative drill some holes along the crack and plug them with other wood species dowels. Use epoxy and force copper wire into the gap with a hammer. If you did not know, Padauk is prone to cracking if it has dark wide veins. Usually those are signs that the tree had some “shaking” damage in its life.

Best of luck! Padauk is a challenging wood to work with, excited to see how it turns out!

Updates.

I just shoved a chisel in the crack and filled it with glue, removed the chisel to let it spread, then repeated the process a second time.
