Over-tightening Chuck Screws

Hey y’all!

Ran into the screws on one of the chucks for the smaller lathes being over-tightened and stripped (picture below just to show which chuck it was). Just wanted to send out a reminder that these screws don’t need to be that tight!

Either of the red handled Allen keys in the drawer can tighten them, and you can just hand tighten them using the Allen key in the short handled position, and that gets them plenty tight.

We’ve also had people use a drill/impact on these screws in the past. I want to discourage this as they are easy to over tighten and damage the jaws themselves.

Thanks y’all!

Do we need an inexpensive torque wrench for wood lathe area?

There’s a wide margin on how tight is acceptable, I just want to avoid people wrenching on them with all of their strength or using drills.

So I think a reminder should be sufficient for now, but I appreciate the idea!
