Reminder about our monthly office hours in the electronics lab tomorrow at noon! Come hang out, talk about your latest project, and improve the shop with friends. See you there!
Hi John,
I have virtually no electronics experience (I soldered something once about 10 years ago), but I have a computer monitor that I’ve self-diagnosed with an internal power regulation failure. The monitor blinks on and off periodically — often synced with mouse or keyboard input — and eventually it will power off completely and won’t turn back on unless I unplug it and plug it back in. I’ve replaced the power cable and the HDMI cable, tried using the other HDMI port, adjusted settings like refresh rate, etc.
It’s a Samsung, and interestingly I had the same issue with a Samsung TV years ago, which turned out to be a degrading capacitor.
My question is: would Office Hours be an appropriate setting to bring the monitor in so we could investigate and evaluate whether replacing the failing parts is possible? I’d love to learn and potentially repair the monitor, but I’m not sure if this is the right environment for that.
Thanks so much!
Oh yeah, absolutely bring it in! This is a perfect office hours project. Also a great way to learn about the basics and pick up some transferable skills — everything’s got a power supply of some sort!
We’ll most likely need to postpone December’s office hours for the holidays, but I’ll update on here either way ahead of time to give folks a heads-up.
PS: I suspect it’s a capacitor this time, too.
