New to 3D printing: Filament or resin?

Howdy, I’m getting ready to take one of the 3D printing classes for a project I’m working on. It’ll involve some relatively small parts, and I’d like them to be translucent, so I’m thinking I should be printing them from resin.

Is there any reason I should take up filament printing first? Just wondering if the learning curve is more steep with resin or anything.

Thanks!

Resin is brittle and can break. The resolution is better than fdm, I think Alex gives a great SLA class. You can always go back for the fdm class.

Hi John! I’m new, and you wrote this a week ago, but just my 2c - filament and resin are two very different beasts, and while there might be some crossover in terms of file prep basics, the things you’ll learn from printing in one medium won’t necessarily carry over to the other.

It sounds like your project is more appropriate for resin than filament.

If you’re feeling like resin is daunting (with its handling requirements and finishing requirements, and the mess it all creates) starting with filament might help you just jump in

Thanks Avi, that’s really helpful. I’m signed up for the resin printing class so we’ll see how it goes! Should be fun.
