I want to share an update regarding IT at Asmbly. Taylor is no longer serving as Director of IT. I’m grateful for the energy and perspective Taylor contributed during their time in the role and I hope we’ll see them involved again when the timing is right.
With this transition, IT at Asmbly is entering an exciting new chapter. With Austin being a tech hub for so many industries, we’re lucky to have both breadth and depth of talent in our community. We have an exciting backlog of projects — ways to improve member experience, streamline operations, and make our systems more sustainable. Volunteers have already been stepping up and we now have openings for more structured roles on the team to better support them.
On the software side, this is a great opportunity for members to deepen their software engineering skills. Projects use real world tools and practices from automations and integrations to GitHub workflows and CI pipelines. This offers a chance to collaborate while contributing to systems that keep Asmbly running. These are great resume building opportunities and I’m happy to give letters of recommendation or serve as a reference for folks I work closely with.
To make sure we’re set up for success, we’re introducing a clearer team structure with defined roles:
- Director of IT — Coordinates IT strategy, ensures smooth operations, and supports volunteers.
- (This role will be appointed through June 2026)
- Lead Developer — Owns software projects, integrations, and GitHub management.
- Filled by @rjnevels — thank you!
- Systems Lead — Focuses on shop computers and onsite systems (with a focus in Windows administration).
- Filled by @YellowEng — thank you!
- Infrastructure & Security Lead – Oversees networking, security, and cloud services like AWS, Wiki, and Discourse.
- Filled by @Jon — thank you!
This structure spreads out responsibilities from the start so no single person is overloaded, while making it easier for volunteers to plug in where they’re strongest, helping projects move forward sustainably. For in depth descriptions of these roles, check out this wiki page.
If you’re interested in helping with IT — whether in one of these roles or on a project basis — please reach out to me directly or comment here.
I’m excited to work together to help make IT a place where Asmbly’s tech talent thrives and continues driving the space forward!
