New insert for Dust Collector trash bag

We made an aluminum insert for the dust collector trash bag. So far it is working great and there have been no false signals. It also makes it easier to slide the can in and out of it’s slots. Please be careful with it as it is aluminum. It should be removed BEFORE removing the plastic bag. Thanks to Gabriel and Savanah for welding it up!

Notes on construction:
It was first designed in SketchUp.

We purchased three 12ft rods of 1/4" aluminum from Metals-4-U. Because it’s aluminum, it is easy to bend, so the welding was minimized by bending the pieces in long runs.

Rods were cut to proper lengths and then had each corner point marked with a pen. The bar was then bent over the edge of a table at each mark, and the angle was checked with an angle gauge (each bend was 45 deg for the rings). The legs had 90 deg bends. The bands only had one weld each. Then each leg was welded on to the top band, then the bottom band.

We can produce this in steel if the aluminum proves to be too fragile. That will be more difficult to bend though, so take care of this one!

Attach a red tag to the top aluminum rim that reads “Remove First”.

I can only imagine the mess that would occur with a bottoms piercing.

Travis, you’ve spoiled the fun!

To Travis’s point, maybe we should paint the whole thing red

I’m thinking it would be better to use small dia solid fiberglass rods and 3d printed joints. It would be much more durable and less likely to tear the bag

We will keep this option in mind! Meanwhile, we will await performance review.
