New Home Tinkering SIG

Hello Everyone

Wanted to announce @torchedguitar and I are starting a new SIG, Home Tinkering.

These meetings will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month, at 7:00 pm. We’ll call it an hour meeting, but if it goes longer that’s ok as well.
The first meeting will be TUESDAY AUGUST 19TH, 2025 at 7pm in the MPR at Asmbly.

The focus of this group will be all things related to smart homes and networking. Never setup your own wifi or don’t know what a mesh network is. Why do people run home servers? What is Home Assistant and why might it be interesting to you. Closed networks vs cloud based networks. And anything else that people may desire.

Like other SIGS, anyone is welcome and you don’t have to be an Asmbly member. We will host this SIG similar to the others, with an open meeting format. Have a fun project you want to share, bring it along. Have questions about a current project, let’s hear them. Just want to sit in the back and listen, welcome.

Something we hope to these will lead to would be dedicated classes or group build alongs designed from member suggestions. Want to learn how to integrate smart LED lighting in your house, but don’t know how to solder a circuit board, power supply and program it all, let’s do it together.

As always, we are open to suggestions on topics for these meetings.

Hope to see you there!!

Hey Everyone. Lots of great talks about this SIG already. We’d like to get an idea of what people are most interested in. Let’s hear what you think please.

Looking forward to it.

I’m most interested in home automation, solar, and stuff like Meshtastic to make local community networks. I’ll be bringing by some hardware to show the latter topic off.

Just bumping this thread to remind everyone our new Home Tinkering special interest group will be having its first meeting this Tuesday at 7pm. No experience needed! Come nerd out with us. The agenda for this meeting is to start by giving all the attendees 5 minutes to introduce themselves, talk about what home tinkering they’ve done already, and what topics they’d like to hear more about in the meetups. And then if time permits, anyone is welcome to present things they’ve done in more detail (sounds like Kenneth already has some good stuff to show) or ask questions they’d like the group to help answer.

See you there!

As this is the first meeting, I cant promise how much engagement we’ll have on Zoom, but all are welcome to it.

I had to leave early due to a CNC booking and desire to make progress on a project before the CNC SIG. This was a promising first meeting and I look forward to the next one.

I like James’s idea of bringing a Home Assistant to the next SIG. I’ll add that we could treat it like a potluck where people bring devices and we see how many things we can add and interact with through Home Assistant.

It might be a fun challenge to see if we can connect person 1’s smart bulb and then trigger it with person 2’s moisture sensor or a person 3’s UV sensor, etc.

@Iammikecohen I think you’re on to something hear. I believe we will be bringing a home assistant green, and hopefully, others will bring devices to try out.
