I’m excited to announce our newest Textiles Class: Sewing - Make a Lined tote Bag
In this hands-on sewing class, students will learn to create a stylish and practical lined tote bag, perfect for everyday use. The class covers essential sewing skills such as cutting fabric, making pockets, sewing seams, attaching straps, and installing a magnetic snap closure. By the end of the course, students will have completed a lined tote bag and built a strong foundation in basic sewing techniques. This class is designed for beginners but is also suitable for anyone looking to refine their sewing skills in a supportive, creative environment.
This class will best fit someone who has at least a small amount of sewing experience, but beginners will still have the tools they need to succeed. All materials are included in the price of the class! We have enough sewing machines for everyone, but if you want to bring a personal sewing machine so you can use a tool you are more familiar with, that is no problem!
After completing this course students should be able to:
Cut and Prepare Fabric: Accurately measure, cut, and prepare fabric pieces, including interfacing and lining preparation.
Construct and Attach Pockets: Create a divided interior pocket, sew it into the lining, and ensure proper placement for optimal functionality.
Sew Seams and Assemble the Tote: Use straight and topstitching techniques to sew seams for both the outer bag and the lining, and learn how to assemble the bag’s structure.
Attach Magnetic Snap Closure: Properly install a magnetic snap closure to secure the bag’s opening, understanding its placement and function.
Create and Attach Straps: Construct sturdy fabric straps, attach them securely to the tote bag, and ensure proper alignment for balance and strength.
Do you know if there’s any flexibility to the the class so that a student can learn to use the Juki rather than the Brother machines? I have a stronger need for the Juki in the long run (for sewing leather) and this would be a neat way to get a backdoor intro to it.
Unfortunately, this instructor doesn’t have any experience with the industrial machines. I definitely agree that there is a need to get some instruction for that beast! I will look into getting an instructor/class for the Juki. If nayone sees this, has experience, and is interested, let me know!
Thank you for chasing it down, Adam – much appreciated.
There is a general “sewing techniques” class which might have a Juki component but it always conflicts with an evening class I’m taking. Maybe I should just look into a private class.
The Sewing: Techniques is also focused on the smaller machines. I’m glad you all brought this need to my attention! I’ve had a Juki class on my radar, now I’ll start pushing more to make it happen!
Just wanted to bring this thread back up because the class was great! Nicole was a fantastic and patient instructor and I recommend her class to anyone who has considered learning to sew.
This is the fastest “I’ve never tried this thing before” to “very cool completed project” craft I’ve tried in a long time. We made a very nice li’l tote bag out of canvas, complete with lining, inner pockets, and a magnetic closure:
