New base for the Rotary

I had some extra melamine, so I (somewhat hastily) cut a new base for the Laguna Rotary. It’s not yet installed, and it needs some holes drilled for the T-nuts. It’s currently sitting under the rotary. At some point I’ll finish this, but if anyone wants to install it feel free. Hopefully I got the measurements correct.

It’s a bit wider so it covers most of section A, although it’s probably going to be a rare day you could use it with only the vacuum

Thanks for make that Al! Happy to install it. Which way did you design the wider side(the cut-out is not centered) to orient? Towards the back wall or towards the operator?

I think it only goes one way due to how the holes are drilled. I meant for the rotary to be closest to the operator, but it could be used either way. I only made small predrilled holes, so that one could manually come through with a Forstner bit on the bottom side, to make a clearance cut for the face of the t-nuts. After that, then go through and make a larger clearance hole all the way through.

We might have some T-nut in the stewards closet, if not, I’ll bring some in.

I’m interested in helping. Please add me into your notes / email list, when you’ll be there to work on it.

I’ve got it all but done. I just need to get shorter screws that attach it to the T nuts. The current screws are proud about an 1/8.

What screw thread and height are they?

They are 1/4 20 x 3/4". I got twenty 1/2" that should do the trick.

Sorry Brian, I was already at the shop in the middle of the job when you wrote this, I believe.

Al, the pocket wasn’t quite big enough(shy on length and width about a 1/16". I chiseled it out and it fits now. It’s not beautiful but I think it will work. Melamine doesn’t like to be chiseled.

We might want to cut a new one then. It’s critical that the rotary axis be aligned to the edge of the melamine. A tight fit in the pocket allows it to reigster against the metal base of the rotary.

I’m going to use the rotary tonight at 7 pm. We shall see if it is workable

Al, if you recut it, please don’t cut the secondary center cut out. The original bed doesn’t have it and the material gets very thin when the counter sinks for the T Nuts are cut. Thanks.
